Grontmij appointed to major projects in Water and Transportation
Stockholm bypass motorway
Grontmij in cooperation with Golder Associates AB has been assigned to design one of the three phases of the new Stockholm bypass motorway project, the traffic junction in Kungens Kurva.

The Stockholm bypass is a new motorway linking southern and northern Stockholm resulting in a new route for the European highway (E4) that passes Stockholm. The 21 km motorway of which 17 km will be tunnels is important due to greater demands on the infrastructure of central Stockholm as the number of inhabitants is growing. The objective is to create a fast south – north connection avoiding Stockholms bottlenecks.

Grontmij’s expertise and work
The expertise that Grontmij will use for this project amongst others will involve traffic planning, landscape architecture, electricity and lighting, project management, construction and design. The design element of the Kungens Kurva project is worth over € 31 million. The total fee for Grontmij will be € 9.1 million. The Stockholm bypass project in total is worth approximately € 2.8 billion. The work of Grontmij will start after the summer of 2010 and will mainly be carried out over the following two years.

Leif Bertilsson, Managing Director of Grontmij in Sweden: ‘That Grontmij won the traffic junction Kungens Kurva is a clear indicator that we are a highly respected and competent actor in the largest road projects in Sweden. I am pleased that the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) selected us for our approach on project management. Our approach aims to increase efficiency through cooperation and advanced work procedures based on our experience in the Swedish industry.’

Scottish Water
Grontmij has been appointed by Scottish Water to three frameworks for delivery of part of its Quality and Standards IIIb (Q&SIIIb) four year investment programme. The total programme is worth € 3 billion.

The framework announcements for ‘Technical Strategic Support Services’, ‘Technical Design Support Services’ and ‘Specialist Consultancy Support Services’ signals the continuation of an ongoing, long term relationship between Grontmij and Scottish Water, with whom the consultancy has worked since the public authority was formed in 2002.

The ‘Technical Strategic Support Services’ framework will see Grontmij support Scottish Water with asset management and the development of their business and investment plans covering a whole range of activities, including “source to tap” and “sink to sea” initiatives.

Delivery of services under the ‘Technical Design Support’ framework will incorporate Grontmij’s civil, mechanical, electrical and telemetry services to design improvements to Scottish Water’s treatment works and sewerage system across Scotland, improving water quality and reducing sewer flooding for customers.

The ‘Specialist Consultancy Support Services’ framework will be used by Scottish Water to augment their project management teams by seconding Grontmij resources into these roles to deliver projects to time, cost and quality constraints. Grontmij’s technical experts will also be engaged to undertake process audits and peer reviews to ensure that proposed schemes meet both business and technical requirements.

Lawrence Hughes, Group Director Water & Energy: ‘We are very pleased to be appointed to these frameworks, which demonstrate that our project teams continue to deliver an efficient, innovative service to water & energy utility companies. Scottish Water is a key client and we have a long-standing relationship with the company, built over many years. Our technical capability, coupled with over 20 years working with the UK’s water and sewerage companies means we have the knowledge and expertise to deliver detailed, high quality solutions.’
