Diabolo: on the right track towards completion
A new connection for Brussels Airport

Brussels, Belgium - Linking Brussels-National-Airport station to the new railway line Schaerbeek - Mechelen, the Diabolo project, an underground railway track underneath the airport, is a major project for the Belgian mobility. It will in fact place Brussels Airport on the axes Paris-Brussels-Antwerp-Amsterdam and Paris-Brussels-Liège-Frankfurt, which explains why Infrabel, the Belgian railway infrastructure manager, is so eager to bring this project to a successful conclusion.

After more than a year’s intensive work, the different parties concerned by the Public Private Partnership (PPP) for the financing of the Diabolo connection are currently very close to reaching an agreement. Nearly all the texts regarding the financial closing of the operation have been finalised. A technical matter will, however, require some extra time from the parties in order to finalise the agreement.

Up to date, no decision has been made with respect to the awarding of the building contract.

Infrabel is a limited liability company of public law, responsible for the management, maintenance, renewal and development of the Belgian railway network. The company is also in charge of the allocation of the licences and slots to all Belgian and foreign operators. The specific structure of the Infrabel shareholders guarantees a total independence. Infrabel was established on 1 January 2005, at the splitting up of the Belgian Railways, and is part of the SNCB Group. The company now employs some 14,000 people and achieves a turnover of about 1.1 billion euro (2006).
