Stadler: VEOLIA orders 16 GTW DMU train sets
Stadler and VEOLIA Transport sign contract for 16 GTW DMU train sets

Bussnang, Switzerland - In 2006, The Dutch Province of Limburg issued a tender for train services, which was won by VEOLIA Transport Nederland. The 10-year concession will start on December 10, 2006. On October 4th, Veolia Transport and Stadler signed their first contract, which comprise the delivery of 10 DMU GTW 2/6 train sets and 6 DMU GTW 2/8 train sets. The 16 GTW train sets will be delivered by the end of 2007 for passenger service on the diesel track Nijmegen – Roermond, which runs through the Provinces Limburg, Noord-Brabant and the Region KAN. The order is worth approximately 50 million Euros.

Peter Spuhler, Stadler Rail owner and Group CEO underscores the importance of this first contract with Veolia Transport by saying that “Stadler is extremely happy to have won the tender with its highly successful GTW. We’re expecting this cooperation to yield positive synergy effects in additional partnership and projects with Veolia Transport.” The GTW articulated train sets are entirely produced in the Stadler Group’s Swiss facility.

Ton Kienhorst, CEO of VEOLIA Transport Nederland: “We have experienced Stadler as an important partner in this project and have chosen their train sets because they completely meet the wishes and demands of Veolia Transport and of our PTA, the Province of Limburg. The trains are highly accessible, which was an important condition in the contract, and are equiped with a high level of technical requirements”. Ton Kienhorst also says to be very proud of having won the Limburg contract. “Veolia Transport already runs bus, taxi and ferry services in the Netherlands. This is our first train operation which makes Veolia Transport a multi modal player in this country”.

The order consists of 6 three-car GTW 2/8 articulated multiple-units with 193 seats and 10 two-car GTW 2/6 articulated multiple-units with 124 seats. Both types are the fourth generation of GTW, fulfil the new Dutch crashworthiness requirements, and will have the modern VEOLIA design. The train sets are accessible for disabled people, equipped with an interior video surveillance system in each passenger car, a closed toilet system accessible for disabled people, a 1st class compartment with 220V connections, an information system using TFT screens, space for 2 wheel chairs and 6 bicycles. The DMU train sets are equipped with 2 complete independent traction equipments, each consisting of a diesel-motor with emission normative Stage 3A, a generator and a converter system for one three-phase asynchronous motor drive.

It operates 16,000 buses, 3,500 trains and has 72,000 employees internationally in 25 countries, with total annual revenue of approximately $5 billion.
