Utrecht, The Netherlands - In the afternoon of Sunday, 17 September 2006, the first Railion trains passed without any problems through the drilled Botlek rail tunnel. The tunnel solves a critical bottleneck in the Betuwe Line. Until recently some 65 freight trains passed daily over the single-track Botlek bridge. And because the bridge was open about half the time for shipping, many freight trains had to wait their turn. The new tunnel enables a significant rise in capacity and increases the reliability of the train service.
Drilling in the highly industrialise Rotterdam port area was an exceptionally complex operation: the underground structure is practically as busy as that above ground. The tunnel is equipped with ultra-modern technical systems, such as sprinklers, ventilators, fire & train detection, telecommunication, emergency power supply and liquid discharge provisions. The Botlek rail tunnel has a total length of 3,065 metres and the distance between the tunnel tubes is about 10 metres.
Minister Peijs of Transport and Water Management will officially open the Botlek rail tunnel on 17 October 2006.
