Thales: first ever deployment of the European standard ETCS in the Americas
Written by: Thales Nederland B.V.

Last Year, Thales announced the successful implementation of ETCS – the European Train Control System – on Mexico’s new Ferrocarriles Suburbanos railway. The line serves a population of 4.8 million people and links Mexico City with Cuautitlán 27km to the north.

The project is a milestone in the development of ETCS: it is the first ever deployment of the European standard in the Americas and it is the first time that ETCS has been used on a commuter line.

Global choice
ETCS was developed to address the need for interoperability, improved safety and enhanced capacity on European railways. But those needs are not unique to Europe: they’re shared
by railways everywhere. That’s one of the reasons why ETCS is fast emerging as a global standard.

infrasite_insert_image_1 Thales is the number-one provider of ETCS solutions, with more than 20 implementations throughout Europe. These include prestige projects such as the Lötschberg rail tunnel
in Switzerland and Spain’s high-speed network. Thales is extending this leadership into the global arena. In Algeria, Thales is providing ETCS for the strategic Rocade Nord axis (profi led in this issue). Elsewhere, new opportunities emerge with the opening of the ETCS market in countries like Turkey, China, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Delivering tomorrow’s railways
As well as improving efficiency, ETCS helps operators to reduce commercial risk: it is based on an open standard, it is fully scalable and it can be adapted easily to local needs. Above all, it’s a transformational technology: ETCS breathes new life into existing infrastructure and allows operators to optimise the use of new lines.

Thales, number-one provider of ETCS
Thales is proud of its pioneering role in the deployment of ETCS. Thales’ turnkey ETCS solutions encompass everything from lineside equipment and interlockings to communications, onboard equipment and maintenance. With its unrivalled experience and expertise, and its global network of Integration Centres dedicated to local delivery, Thales has a proven capability to provide ETCS anywhere in the world.
