Emission Free mobility is becoming increasingly important to the cities and towns of the world. Amsterdam is more than ever aware that the quality of air and noise in the urban area is of the highest importance to its citizens and visitors. The City Government of Amsterdam and the companies and organizations involved in Cycling to Sustainability recognize this and pledge to work to an improved quality of life for people visiting and living in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam has been doing a lot these last years for an improved quality of urban life; Amsterdam knows that it will have to do a lot more to reach its objective to be the best city it can be for its inhabitants and visitors. Therefore Amsterdam seeks to work with experts from all over the world in Conferences and Workshops, in Master Classes and Symposia, in Projects and Research. Amsterdam wil actively look for opportunities to create synergy and learn from others as it will actively offer its best knowledge and experience in return.
Ambitions
Amsterdam has a lot to offer and will share knowledge and insights with other cities and towns all over the world; Amsterdam invites communities from all over the world to come and experience how it works towards improving sustainable mobility in Amsterdam. To that purpose Amsterdam has created ‘Amsterdam Cycling to Sustainability’ with these ambitions:
• The program will collect knowledge on sustainable mobility and will make that available in the ‘Amsterdam International Academy for Sustainable Mobility’
• It invites you to come to the Amsterdam’s ‘Visitor’s Center for Sustainable Mobility’ and will guide you through ‘our’ Amsterdam
• It will continuously create projects for an improved sustainable mobile Amsterdam
Benchmarks
In order to measure results Amsterdam Cycling to Sustainability invites cities to jointly set up a scheme for ‘Benchmarks of Excellence in Sustainable Mobility’. This will be a base for cooperation and mutual support in reaching the very best practice favoring all citizens of participating cities and towns. It will work with universities and companies who take an interest in this scheme and will publish results on a bi-annually basis in a prestigious event.
Sustainable Mobility in Amsterdam
Every day Amsterdammers cycle more than 2 million kilometers emission free, healthy and energy efficient. Amsterdammers typically have 1,2 bicycles. Cycling in Amsterdam is very much part of daily life and Amsterdammers don’t even notice that they have this immense contribution to our quality of life. Amsterdam without cycling would result in a much less attractive capital.
Figures for cycling in Amsterdam:
• Modal split 2007: 37% cycling, 22% public transport, 41% car
• 75% of all Amsterdammers (> 12 year) owns a bicycle
• 50% of all Amsterdammers (> 12 year) cycles daily
• The majority of Amsterdam cyclists are between 25 – 55 years of age
• They are on an average well educated and have a higher income
• On a daily basis Amsterdammers cycle 2 million kilometers in the urban area.
• During evening rush hour alone Amsterdammers cycle 250,000 kilometers
The sustainable mobility pallet also includes:
• Cargo Tram
• Electric Scooter
• Hydro bus
• Whisper Boat
• Tram
• Metro
Businesses and organizations also take their responsibility and work on projects like:
• Freight Bikes
• Bike Taxis
• Sustainable Freight Transport on canals and rivers
• Hydro boot for passenger transport
The city government promotes sustainable mobility through a number of policies like:
• Amsterdam Car Lee City
• Amsterdam Clean Air
• Amsterdam Green Zone
Implementing all these policies and projects is a great support for Amsterdam Cycling to Sustainability.
In 2010 we strive to have realized some or all of the following ambitions:
1. Visitor’s Center for Sustainable Mobility
2. Amsterdam International Academy for Sustainable Mobility
3. Benchmarks of Excellence in Sustainable Mobility
4. Symposia
5. Master Classes
6. Sustainable Freight Transport on canals and rivers
7. Hydro boat for passenger transport
8. Improved infrastructure for emission free mobility in Amsterdam
9. Freight Bikes
10. 10% improvement on the market share “emission free transport”
